Drawing, Painting, Printmaking

Tamiko Stump is an Ohio-born artist with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Her work is centered on figurative art, focusing on themes of identity, transformation, and the evolving nature of womanhood. Drawing on archetypal energies, Tamiko’s pieces explore both personal and universal experiences, inviting viewers to connect with deeper narratives beneath the surface.

Through delicate textures, dreamlike hues, and luminous forms, Tamiko creates work that evokes emotion and introspection. She seeks to reflect the complexities of self-discovery, celebrating both the strength and vulnerability of the human experience. Each piece represents her ongoing exploration of identity, approached with an openness to transformation, both in her art and in life.

Now based in Dayton, Ohio, Tamiko is deeply involved in the local art community. She collaborates with galleries, participates in exhibitions, and works to foster connections among artists and the broader public. Her commitment to supporting the arts in Dayton stems from her belief in the power of art to inspire, connect, and provoke thought.

As an artist, I am driven by the profound connection between human emotion, identity, and the universal experience of transformation. My work, primarily rooted in painting, drawing, and mixed media, explores the ethereal and evolving nature of the human form. I delve into the interplay between individuality and universality, often portraying the delicate tension between vulnerability and strength.
My creative practice is deeply influenced by storytelling—whether personal, collective, or imagined. I draw inspiration from the rhythms of life: the fluidity of movement, the beauty of fleeting moments, and the rawness of emotional expression. These themes often manifest in my art through the use of luminous textures, dreamlike hues, and dynamic compositions that aim to evoke introspection and connection.
To someone unfamiliar with my medium, I would describe my art as a visual exploration of inner worlds—a convergence of realism and abstraction where light, color, and form work in harmony to convey a sense of transformation. My subjects are often figures or fragments of the human body, rendered in ways that feel both grounded and transcendent. Each piece is an invitation to pause, reflect, and uncover the layers of meaning beneath the surface.
The process behind my art is as integral as the final work. I approach each piece intuitively, beginning with sketches or loose studies to capture initial impressions. Observing movement—whether through life studies, rehearsals with dancers, or video references—has become a vital part of my process. I translate these observations into expressive marks, blending fluid brushstrokes with detailed drawing techniques. Each layer of paint or line of graphite becomes part of the story I am telling.
At its core, my art seeks to celebrate the complexities of being human. Through my work, I aim to convey a sense of universality while honoring the unique stories and emotions that shape us. By engaging viewers in a dialogue with my pieces, I hope to foster connection and encourage them to see beauty and possibility within their own journeys.
Art, to me, is a bridge—a way to connect with others and to express the intangible. It is a practice of vulnerability and resilience, one that mirrors the complexities of life itself. My goal is to continue exploring these themes and creating works that resonate, inspire, and transform both myself and those who encounter my art.
